Woman Suffers Severe Burns After Man Allegedly Dumps Chemical Substance On Her Head

A man allegedly threw a corrosive chemical on a woman near one of Savannah’s most popular parks Wednesday night, leaving her with severe burns and melted clothing.

Ashley Wasielewski was returning to her home near Forsyth Park around 8:15 p.m. when an unknown man approached her and threw the substance in her face, WSAV reported, citing a statement from Savannah Police Department (SPD). The attack occurred near Whitaker Street and W. Waldburg Street.

Officers who arrived on scene found Wasielewski’s clothes and car keys melted from the chemical. Witnesses reported hearing terrifying screams.

Paramedics transported Wasielewski to the Augusta Burn Center for treatment. She told police she did not recognize her attacker and has no idea why anyone would target her. (RELATED: ‘Anywhere From 8 To 12 Years Old’: Little Kids Randomly Attack Transgender Woman With Acid-Like Chemical)

Her son, Westley, told local reporters the situation is traumatizing. He said his mother faces a long road of surgeries and therapy, including skin grafts. She is expected to remain hospitalized for at least another week.

SPD Assistant Police Chief Robert Gavin said investigators have identified a person of interest but have made no arrests. He added there is no ongoing threat to the public.

“One of the things that we are doing is making sure that the residents in and around the parks and in that part of town have that police presence,” Gavin said.

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson condemned the attack on Facebook, calling it “absolutely horrific.” He added, “This kind of violence has no place in Savannah.”

Police Chief Lenny Gunther urged anyone who was in Forsyth Park Wednesday evening to come forward, especially those who may have taken photos or video.

“Even a small detail may help us piece together what occurred,” Gunther said.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to support Wasielewski’s recovery.
