Absolutely brilliant move by World Boxing!
The governing body of the sport announced Friday that the organization will implement mandatory sex testing for all competitors, and made it very clear that Imane Khelif won’t be permitted to participate until she gets tested. Khelif won the 2024 Paris Olympics women’s welterweight championship despite not being a female.
World Boxing, who will be operating the 2028 Olympics boxing competitions after they obtained provisional recognition from the IOC, stated that they want to have an equal playing field for both sexes. (RELATED: Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever Gets Absolutely Cooked Over Pride Month Tweet)
“Imane Khelif may not participate in the female category at the Eindhoven Box Cup, 5-10 June 2025 and any World Boxing event until Imane Khelif undergoes genetic sex screening in accordance with World Boxing’s rules and testing procedures,” said World Boxing in an official statement.
Every single athlete 18 years or older will be forced to receive a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) genetic test, which can be done in multiple ways — mouth or nasal swab, blood or saliva — per World Boxing.
“The PCR test is a laboratory technique used to detect specific genetic material, in this case the SRY gene, that reveals the presence of the Y chromosome, which is an indicator of biological sex,” read the statement from the organization.
