You’re going to Africa! Trump admin to possibly send migrants to Rwanda

President Donald Trump has reportedly been in talks with the country of Rwanda regarding deported migrants.

As Trump continues to facilitate the removal of illegal aliens from the United States, Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe has confirmed that his country has been “in discussions with the United States.”

“It has not yet reached a stage where we can say exactly how things will proceed, but the talks are ongoing… still in the early stages,” he said, according to Reuters.

Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, has previously signed an agreement with Britain to accept asylum seekers prior to the deal being scrapped after the election of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Critics have accused Kigali of not respecting human rights, with Amnesty.org reporting that in 2024, “Evidence of torture and other ill-treatment in detention” was found. Rwanda has also flatly denied allegations made by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) regarding potential dangers asylum seekers would have faced if they had been sent to the country.

“Lawyers representing the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Monday that Rwanda’s asylum system was inadequate, as part of a challenge to the British government’s policy to deport asylum seekers there,” Reuters reported in June 2024.

“UNHCR is lying,” a spokesperson for the Rwandan government said at the time.

“The organisation seems intent on presenting fabricated allegations to U.K. courts about Rwanda’s treatment of asylum seekers, while still partnering with us to bring African migrants from Libya to safety in Rwanda.”

It remains to be seen if the courts will block this move as they have done with so many of the Trump administration’s attempts to remove illegal immigrants from the United States.
