Democratic New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said on Monday that he and President Donald Trump could not have had a more productive meeting during his visit to the White House.
Mamdani visited the White House on Friday and had a friendly meeting with the president about working together on the issues facing New York City. The mayor-elect said on “The Adam Friedland Show” that he had a long conversation with Trump about Roosevelt and the issues facing his city.
“What was the weirdest thing he showed you? … He had to have shown you something, one thing weird,” Friedland asked.
“I mean he showed me the portraits of all the presidents in the Cabinet Room. The FDR [portrait] was beautiful. It was really nice And we talked about FDR for a little bit. And honestly, you don’t have you don’t have the LaGuardia record if you don’t have FDR. Yeah, but we talked about that,” Mamdani said. Mamdani added that they had “the most productive meeting” possible, since they discussed the costs of groceries, childcare, rent and other necessities that Americans are struggling to afford.
“It honestly felt like the most productive meeting we could have had. I mean, a meeting where we talked about [Uniform Land Use Review Procedure], we talked about, you know, groceries, Con [Edison], rent, child care, that feels like the best meeting you can have,” Mamdani continued.
Trump ensured that the meeting remained friendly while they spoke to the press. While Mamdani fumbled a question on whether he believes Trump is a fascist, the president chimed in and told him he could believe it.
The president also told reporters that he and Mamdani agree on several issues, including affordability and crime. Mamdani added that New Yorkers who voted for Trump told him that the cost of living was their biggest concern and he looks forward to partnering with the president to bring down costs.
The two leaders had repeatedly attacked one another publicly, as Mamdani named his campaign tour, “The Five Boroughs Against Trump,” to run in opposition to his agenda. Trump repeatedly referred to Mamdani as a “communist” and even threatened to arrest him if he followed through with his threats to interfere with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.
Mamdani has promised to implement a $30 minimum wage, rent freezes and government-run grocery stores and buses. In 2021, he said during a Young Democratic Socialists of America conference that the goal of socialism is to “seize the means of production.”
