Two U.S. Embassy officials died in a vehicle crash in northern Mexico after helping dismantle clandestine drug laboratories in the state of Chihuahua, U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson announced Sunday.
Their vehicle, at the front of a convoy of five official cars, lost control and tumbled into a ravine, state prosecutor Cesar Jauregui told reporters, according to CBS News. Two Chihuahua State Investigation Agency members also perished: Director Pedro Román Oseguera Cervantes and officer Manuel Genaro Méndez Montes, according to a state attorney general’s office press release.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two U.S. Embassy personnel, the Director of Chihuahua’s State Investigation Agency (AEI), and an AEI officer in this accident,” Johnson said in part in a post on X.
“This tragedy is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by those Mexican and U.S. officials who are dedicated to protecting our communities,” he added. (RELATED: US Reps Reportedly Save Key Wargames As Trump Admin Targets Deadly Cartels)
The crash followed a two-day raid on April 17 and 18 that destroyed six large-scale synthetic drug production sites in the municipality of Morelos, Fox News reported. A three-month investigation preceded the operation, which turned up industrial equipment, gas cylinders and thousands of liters of chemical precursors. Jauregui called one location among the largest chemical drug manufacturing facilities ever found in the country, according to the outlet.

The two Americans functioned as “instructor officers” embedded with Mexican law enforcement for anti-drug training purposes, Jauregui said, according to CBS News. Their names have not been made public as of publication.
Mexico has stepped up its destruction of cartel-linked drug labs in recent months after President Donald Trump threatened possible military intervention against the criminal organizations, CBS News reported.
