Former NFL Player Chris Payton-Jones Dead At 30 After Car Crash In Florida

Chris Payton-Jones, a former defensive back in the NFL, is dead after being killed in an auto accident that took place Saturday night in Florida, according to officials. He was 30 years old.

Per the Florida Highway Patrol, Payton-Jones was driving a vehicle before hitting a pickup truck. His vehicle then caught fire as the pickup truck overturned, First Coast News reported. Payton-Jones was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Fox 2 Now.

Between 2018-21, Payton-Jones competed for a total of four franchises in the NFL, ultimately going on to play in the XFL for the Seattle Sea Dragons. Later joining the UFL, he played for the St. Louis BattleHawks. (RELATED: Former NFL Star Ted Ginn Jr. Hit With DWI Charge In Texas)

A statement was released by the UFL regarding Payton-Jones’ death, per Fox News.

“The United Football League is in mourning after the tragic passing of former St. Louis Battlehawks Defensive Back Chris Payton-Jones. Chris was a beloved teammate and leader in the locker room, who demonstrated the importance of hard work, determination, and resilience throughout his career.

“As importantly, Chris was always a bright soul who everyone throughout the league enjoyed spending time with off-the-field during his three-year tenure. From fan appearances and media engagements to his own content creation and openness to share the highs and lows of his personal journey, Chris carried himself with humility and integrity. Our condolences are with his family, friends, teammates, and all others who are impacted by this loss.”

During his college days at the University of Nebraska, Payton-Jones was considered a standout player. In 2021, he became a member of the Arizona Cardinals, doing so as an undrafted free agent. He went on to play for the Tennessee Titans, Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings.

In total, he played 29 games in the NFL, racking up 48 tackles and seven pass breakups.

For the BattleHawks, he competed in 18 regular-season contests, tallying 56 tackles and two interceptions.
