Man Kills Woman At Ancient Pyramids In Deadly Shooting, Officials Say

A man killed a Canadian woman and injured others at Mexico’s Teotihuacan pyramids after opening fire, officials said Monday.

He began shooting at the renowned archeological and tourist site, fatally shooting the woman before killing himself, the Mexican security cabinet announced in a preliminary report on social media, according to CNN. Officials said they seized a gun, a bladed weapon and live ammunition from the scene. No less than six people were wounded — four via gunfire and two via falling — and are receiving medical help, according to the State of Mexico. Two Colombians, a Canadian and a Russian are among those injured, Secretary for Security of the State of Mexico Cristobal Castaneda told the press, CNN reported. He said the incident is currently under control. Footage online appears to show at least one man moving atop a pyramid while a gunshot can be heard.

Teotihuacan is a significant historical site and tourist attraction in the State of Mexico located approximately 30 miles from Mexico City, the country’s capital, according to the outlet. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the location is filled with a number of monuments including two massive pyramids.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said federal and local authorities have responded to the incident in a statement on X “What happed today in Teotihuacan deeply pains us. I express my most sincere solidarity with the people affected and their families. We are in contact with the Canadian Embassy,” the president said.

The Mexican foreign ministry noted it is in contact with embassies from other nations and is working to offer required assistance to wounded foreign nationals, CNN reported.
