A U.S. Secret Service officer was shot amid a shooting Saturday in the vicinity of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD) but has survived, President Donald Trump said.
Trump said the officer was shot and survived at a press conference after the shooting. A source familiar with the investigation told the Daily Caller a Secret Service member was shot.
“One officer was shot but saved by the fact that he was wearing obviously a very good bullet proof vest, he was shot from very close distance with a very powerful gun, and the vest did the job. I just spoke to the officer and he’s doing great, he’s in great shape. He’s in very high spirits, and we told him we love him and respect him. President Trump and senior officials in his administration were evacuated from the Washington Hilton Hotel after gunshots were heard. Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi said one individual was taken into custody. Trump vowed to reschedule the WHCD within 30 days.
