Bill Maher declared Western civilization superior to its alternatives on Friday’s “Real Time” and challenged anyone who disagreed to prove him wrong.
“No, it was a clash of civilizations — the civilizations are very different and ours is better,” Maher said to loud applause from his studio audience, according to the New York Post (NYP). “And if you’re not clapping, spend a week in a Muslim capital, you wouldn’t last — especially as a woman.”
The comedian kicked off the discussion by citing Vice President JD Vance’s recent trip to Budapest, where Vance campaigned for Prime Minister Viktor Orban ahead of Sunday’s national election, the NYP reported. Maher told panelists Douglas Murray and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America founder Paul Rieckhoff that Orban “goes too far” in certain areas but insisted Western civilization exists and deserves protection. Maher has struck similar notes before, sparring with Ana Kasparian on his podcast in December over the treatment of women in Islamic countries. Vance put that same argument front and center during his April 7 Budapest rally. The vice president told roughly 5,000 attendees at MTK Sportpark that the U.S. and Hungary together represent “the defense of Western civilization,” built on “Christian civilization and Christian values,” CBS News reported. Orban, who has governed Hungary for 16 years, trails his main challenger in polling ahead of Sunday’s vote, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Maher did not spare Orban from criticism, however. He questioned why Washington and Moscow both appear invested in the same candidate’s victory. “Russia is basically running his campaign. Russia is campaigning for him to win, and we’re campaigning for him to win. We’re working with Russia on the same guy… to win an election?” Maher said, per the NYP.
Murray pointed to Orban’s border enforcement as a contrast to EU nations that opened their doors to mass migration, the NYP reported. He still objected to Orban’s closeness with Moscow but attributed it partly to Hungary’s dependence on Russian energy supplies.
