President Donald Trump says he could make the trip to Pakistan himself if his envoys nail down a deal during this week’s next round of Iran talks.
Special Envoy Steve Witkoff arrives in Islamabad on Monday night before Tuesday’s talks with Iranian negotiators, Trump told the New York Post (NYP) in a Sunday phone call. Jared Kushner, who has handled prior dealmaking in the region, will also attend. Vice President JD Vance is skipping this round, with Trump citing security concerns to ABC News. Qatari officials have already positioned themselves in Islamabad in case Trump flies over, though President Trump told the NYP any visit would “probably come at a later date.” (RELATED: Trump Lays Out Terms For End To Iran War)
The two-week US-Iran cease-fire expires Wednesday, and Washington’s previous in-person session with Tehran wrapped April 11 following 21 straight hours of meetings that failed to yield an agreement, according to the NYP. Trump has already pushed back on reports that his team floated a 20-year pause on Iranian uranium enrichment, telling the NYP, “I’ve been saying they can’t have nuclear weapons, so I don’t like the 20 years.”

Weekend developments in the Persian Gulf have complicated the diplomatic push. Two Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats targeted a tanker with gunfire Saturday as it moved through the Strait of Hormuz, the Royal Navy-operated UK Maritime Trade Operations center reported. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had declared on X Friday that commercial passage through the strait was “completely open,” though Tehran’s Supreme National Security Council reversed course the next day and tied any reopening to a full lift of the US naval blockade, according to CNBC.
Trump has kept the pressure on Tehran publicly. He told Fox News host Trey Yingst that if Iran refuses to “sign this deal, the whole country is going to get blown up.” The president has also revived his threat to strike bridges and energy sites across Iran, the NYP reported, and wants Tehran to surrender what remains of its nuclear program.
