Virginia Police Arrest 14-Year-Old Mother For Car Crash That Killed Her 1-Year-Old Baby

Police arrested a 14-year-old girl on multiple charges after a DUI crash on a Virginia interstate allegedly killed her own 1-year-old son.

Family members told WTKR News 3 that the teen behind the wheel was the mother of the boy, identified by relatives as Ma’Khai. The child would have celebrated his second birthday on April 4, they said. His paternal grandmother, April Logan, told the outlet her 17-year-old son fathered Ma’Khai. Despite her anger, Logan said she could not bring herself to despise the teen mother.

“The Lord, my spirit, won’t let me. My spirit won’t let me,” Logan told WTKR. (RELATED: 7-Year-Old Boy, 12-Year-Old Girl Escape Fiery Car Crash Wreckage. Four Family Members Die)

Ma’Khai’s godfather, Donte Walls, directed a blunt message at young people. “Be more responsible,” Walls said. “Stop trying to outgrow your age and just be your age. There’s nothing wrong with being a teenager. Stop thinking that you’re grown.”

The single-vehicle wreck occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on March 23 along eastbound I-64 in Hampton, according to WAVY-TV 10, citing Virginia State Police (VSP). The vehicle went off the right side of the freeway and hit a guardrail on the right shoulder, then careened across lanes and slammed into the median barrier, police alleged. The teen was allegedly not wearing a seatbelt and the child was not secured appropriately. Authorities have not disclosed whether the impairment charge involves alcohol or drugs. Virginia law sets the minimum licensable driving age at 16 years and three months.

Relatives said they had no idea how the teen allegedly obtained a vehicle. The teen faces charges for DUI, operating a vehicle without a license and violating child restraint. Another charge remains pending, according to the VSP.
